Model Theory of XPath on Data Trees. Part I: Bisimulation and Characterization
نویسندگان
چکیده
We investigate model theoretic properties of XPath with data (in)equality tests over the class of data trees, i.e., the class of trees where each node contains a label from a finite alphabet and a data value from an infinite domain. We provide notions of (bi)simulations for XPath logics containing the child, descendant, parent and ancestor axes to navigate the tree. We show that these notions precisely characterize the equivalence relation associated with each logic. We study formula complexity measures consisting of the number of nested axes and nested subformulas in a formula; these notions are akin to the notion of quantifier rank in first-order logic. We show characterization results for fine grained notions of equivalence and (bi)simulation that take into account these complexity measures. We also prove that positive fragments of these logics correspond to the formulas preserved under (non-symmetric) simulations. We show that the logic including the child axis is equivalent to the fragment of first-order logic invariant under the corresponding notion of bisimulation. If upward navigation is allowed the characterization fails but a weaker result can still be established. These results hold both over the class of possibly infinite data trees and over the class of finite data trees. Besides their intrinsic theoretical value, we argue that bisimulations are useful tools to prove (non)expressivity results for the logics studied here, and we substantiate this claim with examples.

متن کاملDefinability for Downward and Vertical XPath on Data Trees
We study the expressive power of the downward and vertical fragments of XPath equipped with (in)equality tests over data trees. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a class of pointed data trees to be definable by a set of formulas or by a single formula of each of the studied logics. To do so, we introduce a notion of saturation, and show that over saturated data trees bisimulation ...
متن کاملSemantic Characterizations of Navigational XPath
We give semantic characterizations of the expressive power of navigational XPath (a.k.a. Core XPath) in terms of first order logic. XPath can be used to specify sets of nodes and sets of paths in an XML document tree. We consider both uses. For sets of nodes, XPath is equally expressive as first order logic in two variables. For paths, XPath can be defined using four simple connectives, which t...
متن کاملCovering Indexes for XML Queries: Bisimulation - Simulation = Negation
Tree Pattern Queries (TPQ), Branching Path Queries (BPQ), and Core XPath (CXPath) are subclasses of the XML query language XPath, TPQ ⊂ BPQ ⊂ CXPath ⊂ XPath. Let TPQ = TPQ ⊂ BPQ ⊂ CXPath ⊂ XPath denote the corresponding subclasses, consisting of queries that do not involve the boolean negation operator not in their predicates. Simulation and bisimulation are two different binary relations on gr...
متن کاملSuccinct Encodings for XPath Location Steps
We consider in this paper the problem of encoding XML documents in small space while still supporting XPath Location steps efficiently. We model XML documents as multi-labeled trees, and propose for those an encoding which takes space close to the lower bound suggested by information theory, while still supporting the search for the ancestors, descendants and children matching a given label eff...
